Authorities in the United Arab Emirates say they have arrested an alleged "organized cell" group suspected of planning to carry out attacks in the country and neighbouring nations, the U.A.E.'s official state news agency said today.
An investigation, conducted in co-ordination with security forces in Saudi Arabia, allegedly showed that the group "imported material, equipment and devices with the intention of carrying out terrorist attacks," said WAM.
"Members of an organized cell of misguided Emirati and Saudi citizens plotting to carry out acts that would impinge on the national security of the UAE, Saudi Arabia and some brotherly countries have been detained," it said in a statement, but did not elaborate further.
The statement posted on the WAM website Wednesday added that the UAE had taken "necessary measures" to detain the group members, and will refer them to the Federal State Security Prosecutor for investigation.
