A magnitude 6.3 quake struck Monday off the coast of eastern Indonesia. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

An official at Indonesia's national earthquake agency said there was no danger of a tsunami so no warning was issued.

One hotel employee in the city of Ambon said guests scrambled from their rooms but there appeared to be no damage.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the undersea quake was centred about 140 kilometres southeast of Ambon at 6:43 p.m. local time (7:43 a.m. ET). It struck at a depth of 34 kilometres.

The area around Indonesia is prone to frequent powerful quakes.
