Libya's landmark election moved to July

Libya’s first election in more than 50 years is being postponed due to logistical problems, according to the head of the electoral commission.

The election is for a general assembly which will have the key task of creating the country’s constitution. The date has been moved from June 18 to July 7, according to Reuters and Al-Jazeera.

Nuri al-Abbar, the commission head, made the announcement Sunday.

He said several requirements to run the election, including voter registration and proper vetting of candidates, has run over schedule.

The last time Libya had a multi-party election was in 1952.

Around 2.7 million voters are eligible to cast ballots to fill 200 seats.

Libya is currently governed by the National Transitional Council, an unelected body of civic and tribal leaders and opponents of former dictator Moammar Gadhafi.
