Carnival celebrations around the world peak Tuesday for Mardi Gras, which at midnight ushers in Lent, the period of fasting and self-denial before Easter Sunday.
Until then, revellers cut loose in a cultural kaleidoscope that ranges from marching jazz bands in New Orleans, quirky Old World traditions, and Rio de Janeiro's wild street parties and Sambadrome parades.
