The United States Geological Survey said the quake was centred about 115 kilometres east of Ishigaki-jima in the Ryukyu Islands, or about 320 kilometres southwest of Naha, Okinawa. The tremor occurred at 10:28 p.m. local time.

Reuters reported that Japanese television stations were warning of a possible 50-centimetre tsunami for nearby islands. However, the tsunami warning was lifted about 45 minutes after it was issued.

The quake's depth was about 35.9 kilometres, the USGS said. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
