Angelina Jolie is to make her debut as a director and screenwriter in a film set against the 1992-1995 Bosnian war.

British film company GK Films is backing the film, an as-yet-unnamed romance set against the ethnic conflict.

The $15 million US project is not political, Jolie said, but follows the relationship of young Serb and Muslim woman who meet on the eve of the war.

Jolie said she plans to cast people of many ethnic backgrounds in the film, among them Croatian actor Rade Serbedzija. She will produce, but not act in the picture.

"I would like to involve as many local people as possible and learn as much as I can, " Jolie told UsMagazine.com.

Jolie was photographed scouting for locations in Budapest, Hungary over the weekend. She plans to start shooting in Bosnia this fall.

She was recently in Bosnia in her capacity as ambassador for the United Nations refugee agency and talked with officials about the more than 100,000 people who are still refugees 15 years after the war.

Bosnian officials said Saturday that Jolie is interested in supporting education and other projects to help young Bosnians.

The actress is also reported to be considering a role in a new adaptation of the British television miniseries Unforgiven.
