Charlottetown police are assisting the FBI and other U.S. authorities following the arrest of a man in Maine accused of producing child pornography.

Matthew DeHart, 26 of Indiana was arrested by police in Calais, Maine, on Aug. 11, Charlottetown police told CBC News on Tuesday. He was charged with the production of child pornography in Tennessee.

Const. Randy Currie said DeHart went to school on P.E.I. this summer, and he was on the Island for less than three months and came to the province from Montreal. He would not name the school.

Following a request from U.S. authorities, Charlottetown police executed a search warrant where DeHart had been living.

"We seized several computing systems and computer peripherals. We will be examining that as part of our investigation," said Currie.

"There's two components to our investigation. The first component will be assisting U.S. authorities and the second component will be to basically examine them for the purposes here in this province."

Currie said police are investigating if any child pornography was produced on P.E.I.

DeHart is being held in a jail in Bangor, where he's expected to stay until a transfer to custody of federal marshals in Nashville can be arranged.
