Moderate quake hits Taiwan

A moderate earthquake has struck the eastern part of Taiwan, the Central Weather Bureau reports.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

The bureau said the quake registered magnitude of 5.6, while the U.S. Geological Survey put it at 5.4.

The earthquake struck at 8:31 a.m. local time Tuesday and was centred in the eastern county of Hualien, about 135 kilometres southeast of the capital of Taipei.

Earthquakes frequently rattle Taiwan but most are minor and cause little or no damage. However, a 7.6-magnitude earthquake in central Taiwan in 1999 killed more than 2,300 people.
