CBC News correspondent Anthony Germain followed the Thai army as it entered the anti-government protesters' encampment in a pre-dawn raid Wednesday, May 19, 2010, at Lumpini Park in Bangkok.
Germain, a broadcast journalist, captured these images from the front lines as soldiers battled protesters.
Smoke billows from Bangkok, where Wednesday's raids against Thai anti-government protesters prompted them to light fire to tire barricades they had erected in the capital. Firefighters were too afraid to put out the blazes because they feared being attacked. (Anthony Germain/CBC)

The Thai soldiers' raid on anti-government protesters in Bangkok led to clashes that resulted in the death of at least five people, including an Italian photographer. Dozens more were wounded, including Chandler Vandergrift, a Canadian freelance journalist. (Anthony Germain/CBC)
Thai soldiers pause during their raid. The Canadian Embassy in Bangkok has been closed because of its proximity to the site of the clashes.
