Michaëlle Jean on Wednesday thanked the people of Haiti's neighbour for their help in the aftermath of January's earthquake.

Jean spent the day in the Dominican Republic following a heart-wrenching two-day visit to Haiti, her birthplace.

In the capital of Santo Domingo, Jean met with President Leonel Fernandez and members of his cabinet.

"Canada was very impressed by the work of the Dominican Republic in disaster efforts," Jean said.

Haiti and the Dominican Republic share the island of Hispaniola.

Before she returns to Canada, the Governor General will also visit a Dominican orphanage that has been caring for Haitian children after the quake.
