(Reuters)Former U.S. Senate majority leader Bob Dole has been hospitalized and is undergoing therapy after recovering from pneumonia, a spokesman said Monday.
The 86-year-old former Republican presidential candidate was admitted to the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington about three weeks ago with a respiratory condition, spokesman Michael Marshall said.
He said Dole recuperated from his bout with pneumonia but has remained at the military hospital to regain strength from earlier surgery on his left knee.
Dole overcame disabling war wounds to forge a 36-year political career. In the early 1990s, he underwent successful surgery for prostate cancer.
He served four terms in the U.S. House of Representatives before he was elected to the Senate in 1968. He retired from the Senate in 1996 to run for the presidency against Democrat Bill Clinton.
