Ohio firefighters work to rescue the trapped survivors of a fatal bus crash Thursday afternoon. (Marshall Gorby/Springfield News-Sun/Associated Press) Four people were killed and seven others were injured after a bus carrying special needs clients collided with a tanker truck near Dayton, Ohio, on Thursday afternoon.
All of the dead were from the special needs bus, including the driver, said Sgt. Raymond Durant of the Ohio Highway Patrol.
The tanker was travelling on a highway in Harmony Township, which is about 60 kilometres northeast of Dayton, when it jackknifed and swerved into the oncoming lane around 1 p.m. ET.
The Dayton Daily News reported that the bus was coming from a centre that provides vocational and rehabilitation services for adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities.
It was carrying eight clients and two staff members, the centre's program director told the Daily News.
Some of the injured are believed to be in critical condition, according to other local media.
The tanker's driver was not seriously injured.
Parts of Ohio received up to 12 centimetres of snow Thursday afternoon, prompting several districts to issue winter weather advisories.
Local officials have not said if weather was a significant factor in the accident.
