The guard, who was in an observation tower, was shot and killed, Egyptian state television reported.

The Hamas rulers of Gaza had called for a demonstration over the delay of the aid convoy, but hundreds of youth began throwing rocks over the border at Egyptian guards.

Shots were reported to have been fired on both sides of the border.

On Tuesday, security guards at the port city of El-Arish clashed with international pro-Gaza activists, leaving 50 activists and about a dozen security personnel injured. Those tensions started when Egypt would not permit part of the aid convoy to pass through its territory and into Gaza.

Israel has blockaded Gaza for 28 months, since Hamas took control of the territory.

Egypt has come under criticism from Arab and Muslim groups for supporting the blockade.

The convoy of about 200 vehicles was organized by the British-based group Viva Palestina to take aid and vehicles to Gaza. Egypt ordered about 45 vehicles left behind, Wael Asakka, a Jordanian activist said.

The aid organizers were also told that 59 of the vehicles cannot go through Egypt, but must go through Israeli checkpoints.
