Mudslides and flooding caused by heavy rains have killed at least 18 people in Brazil, officials said Thursday.

They said the victims included five people in one family who died from a landslide in Jacarepagua, west of Rio de Janeiro.

There are reports that poorly constructed homes in the greater Rio de Janeiro city area and in more sparsely populated areas have collapsed under mud or rain.

About 200 people had to flee their homes in northern Rio after three rivers burst their banks.

Rio de Janeiro state's Office of Civil Defence said more deaths are likely as more rains are expected.

The deaths in the past 24 hours came as about two million people were preparing to gather along Rio's Copacabana beach to ring in the New Year.
