Queen Elizabeth's annual Christmas message emphasized a year marred by the economic downturn and the war in Afghanistan, but she stressed that people should not be deterred from working toward a "better future."

In her annual Christmas address, the Queen noted it 'was a difficult year for many, in particular those facing the continued effects of the economic downturn.'

'We must never cease to work for a better future for ourselves and for others.'—Queen Elizabeth

She said all have been affected by the events in Afghanistan and saddened by the casualties of the British troops serving in the war-torn country.

“Our thoughts go out to their relations and friends, who have shown immense dignity in the face of great personal loss, but we can be proud of the positive contribution that our service men and women are making, in conjunction with our allies,” she said.

She said the soldiers in Afghanistan from Commonwealth nations, and their predecessors, are all owed a debt of gratitude.

The Queen also hailed the Commonwealth as an organization that remains “a strong and practical force for good” and an “opportunity for its people to work together, to achieve practical solutions to problems.”

The Queen said while Christmas is a time for celebration and family reunions, it is also a time to reflect on those less fortunate.

"We may ourselves be confronted by a bewildering array of difficulties and challenges, but we must never cease to work for a better future for ourselves and for others," she said.
