Former U.S. vice-president Dick Cheney is blasting the Justice Department's decision to investigate whether CIA interrogators abused suspects detained after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. (Associated Press) The FBI must publicly reveal much of its interview with former U.S. vice-president Dick Cheney during an investigation into who leaked the identity of a CIA operative, a federal judge has ruled.
The FBI interviewed Cheney while he was in office in June 2004 during its investigation of the leak of Valerie Plame's identity after her husband criticized the Bush administration.
Both the Bush and Obama administrations have said they wanted to keep the interview confidential because future vice-presidents may not co-operate with criminal investigations if it became public.
However, U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan ruled Thursday in Washington there is no justification to withhold the entire interview since the investigation has concluded. He said that limited parts could be withheld to protect national security or personal privacy.
