(Jim Watson/AFP/Getty Images)Prime Minister Stephen Harper is to make his first official visit to Washington since Barack Obama became the U.S. president.
Harper will meet with Obama on Sept. 16. Obama visited Canada in February, shortly after taking office, his first foreign visit as president.
"The prime minister has accepted an invitation from President Obama," said Harper spokesman Dimitri Soudas.
"The two leaders are expected to discuss a range of issues, including the upcoming G20 Summit in Pittsburgh, co-operation on economic recovery and trade, climate change and energy, and security co-operation."
Another issue Harper is expected to address is the Buy American provision in the U.S stimulus package that gives priority to U.S. iron, steel and other manufactured goods for use in public works and building projects funded with recovery money.
Harper is heading to Mexico on Sunday for a conference with Obama and Mexican President Felipe Calderon.
A week after his meeting with Obama in Washington, Harper will return to the U.S. to attend the G20 Summit in Pittsburgh.
