Irish band U2 will bestow Amnesty International's highest honour — the Ambassador of Conscience Award — in absentia on Burma's pro-democracy leader and Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi at a concert in Dublin Monday night.

Suu Kyi, 64, is on trial in Rangoon for allegedly violating the terms of her house arrest by harbouring an uninvited American man who swam to her lakeside home and stayed for two days.

Her lawyers were to present a final argument in an attempt to save her from a possible five-year prison term.

The human rights watchdog hopes the honour will deter Burma's military government from imposing any harsh new punishments on Suu Kyi.

Her opposition party won national elections in Burma, also known as Myanmar, in 1990, but military rulers refused to relinquish power. She been under house arrest for 14 of the past 20 years.

The trial has drawn international condemnation from critics who believe the ruling junta is using it an excuse to keep her behind bars through elections planned for next year.
