The death toll in the aftermath of a burst dam outside Jakarta has risen to 91, officials said Sunday.

A day earlier, authorities reported 77 confirmed deaths.

National Disaster Co-ordinating Agency spokesman Priyadi Kardono said Sunday at least 91 died and more than 100 remained missing. The death toll is expected to rise.

Torrential rains caused an earthen dam built in the early 1900s to burst its banks on the southwestern edge of Jakarta early Friday, sending two million cubic metres of water flooding into more than 400 homes, toppling telephone lines and sweeping away cars.

Search and rescue efforts are expected to continue for a week.

The Public Works Ministry said an investigation into what caused the dam to burst will be conducted, although many in the flooded area have accused authorities of failing to recognize warning signs and repair damage to the dam.

Hundreds gathered at nearby Muhammadiyah University, which was turned into a makeshift morgue.

Bodies were lined up in a row under batik sheets, and parents were faced with the grim prospect of identifying their children.

Four field hospitals were set up to accommodate more than 180 wounded, some with broken bones, head wounds and severe cuts, said Rustam Pakaya, an official with the government crisis centre.
