The death toll in a mudslide that struck a mine warehouse in northern China rose to 128 on Wednesday, even as rescue workers continued looking for victims in the rubble, state media reported.
The landslide happened at about 8 a.m. Monday at Tashan Mine in Linfen city in China's Shanxi province.
China's Xinhua state newspaper reported that the government plans to investigate the cause of the accident.
The newspaper cited rescue officials as saying an initial investigation found heavy rain caused a holding pond overfilled with waste ore at the unlicensed iron mine to disintegrate.
State media reported more than 2,200 police, firefighters and villagers had joined the hunt for survivors on Wednesday.
China has some of the world's most dangerous mines, killing thousands of people every year in explosions, fires and floods.
