At least 11 people were killed early Wednesday when a fire swept through a karaoke bar in northern China, said state media.

The fire broke out at the Gedu Love Song Hall in Chengde county in Hebei province at about 4 a.m. local time, said Xinhua News Agency.

An investigation into the blaze is underway, said the report.

Deadly fires are common in China because of lax safety standards.
