An Afghan civilian is expected to recover after being shot by Canadian soldiers, military officials said Friday.

The incident happened Thursday afternoon near the Canadian forward operating base Martello, about 200 kilometres north of Kandahar city.

Canadian soldiers fired one shot at a taxi when it failed to slow down as it approached the base, said Lt.-Cmdr. Kris Phillips. It missed the driver but hit the car's passenger in the leg.

Phillips said the wounded man received first aid at the scene and was airlifted to Kandahar Airfield for further treatment. His injury isn't considered life-threatening.

The base is near the borders of Uruzgan and Zabul provinces and is one of the most remote of Canada's forward operating bases.

More than 2,000 Canadian soldiers are part of the NATO-led mission in Afghanistan.
