Mexican President Vicente Fox says he believes evidence in the murder of a Woodbridge couple at a Mexican resort points to Canadian suspects, an angle being pursued by police investigators in Cancun.

Fox made the comments in a Globe and Mail story published Tuesday.

He said the claim was supported by the fact the killings did not appear to be random and took place in the Ianieros' hotel room.

Fox reiterated that Cancun remained a safe destination for vacationers and said the criminals had to be found and punished.

Domenico and Nancy Ianiero were murdered Feb. 20 in their room at a resort near Cancun. They were in Mexico for the wedding of their daughter.

Mexican investigators at the time said the crime was the work of two Canadian women who had left the country. They pinpointed two working mothers from Thunder Bay who had been visiting the resort at the same time as the Ianieros.

The investigators later backtracked, saying the women were never key suspects, and turned their attention to 16 members of the Ianiero wedding party.

Police have also started looking at the possibility the crime may have been committed by people who worked at the resort. No arrests have been made in the case.
