France's honorary consul to Haiti has been killed while driving his car in Port-au-Prince.
The French Embassy reports Paul-Henri Mourral was shot by a group of men who pulled him from his vehicle and stole his car.
The killing comes less than a week after the Canadian, French and U.S. governments issued travel warnings for Haiti, citing deteriorating security conditions and an upsurge in carjackings and kidnappings.
A message on the Department of Foreign Affairs website cautions Canadians "that they should not travel to Haiti unless they have critical or compelling business or family reasons. The security situation is dangerous and unpredictable. Kidnappings and carjackings are on the rise."
Mourral, 53, represented French commercial interests in Cap-Haitien.
It's believed more than 700 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in Port-au-Prince since September.
A 7,400-member UN peacekeeping force has been unable to put an end to the violence since the February 2004 rebellion that ousted President Jean-Bertrand Aristide.
