At least 31 Iraqi policemen have been kidnapped in western Iraq while returning from training in Jordan, officials confirmed Wednesday.

A police spokesperson said armed gunmen ambushed the policemen Sunday while they were in a hotel in the town of Rutba near the Jordanian border.

Police, police stations and recruitment centres have often been attacked by insurgents.

Several police stations in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul were attacked last Thursday, prompting U.S. and Iraqi troops to intervene.

Last month, nine Iraqi policemen returning from a training course in Jordan were ambushed and killed on their way home to Karbala.
