The United Nations has started to deliver food supplies to Sudan's Darfur region.

The UN's World Food Program began dropping food by air to 72,000 people the area who were isolated by heavy rains.

The Sunday delivery of 22 tons of beans and lentils is an expensive last resort, said the country director in Sudan, Ramiro Lopes da Silva.

"But for many parts of Darfur we simply have no other option at this time of year," he said.

On Monday, the first of five cargo planes left Egypt bound for Sudan with medicine, tents, and other supplies.

Egypt earlier sent 1,000 tonnes of food.

The UN estimates that about a 1.2 million people have been forced to flee their homes because of the conflict in Sudan.

It estimates more than two million people are in urgent need of food, medicine and other basics.
