Nigeria has offered to host peace talks between the president of Congo and his Rwandan counterpart.

Tensions between the two central African neighbours have been growing since Congo accused Rwanda of backing an insurgency earlier this month.

Nigeria's President Olusegun Obasanjo says both Congolese leader Joseph Kabila and Rwandan leader Paul Kagame will meet in Nigeria's capital to find ways to ease tensions and find peace.

Earlier this week Kabila denied he was planning on going to war with Rwanda. He said such a move is not in Congo's interests, so it's not likely to happen.

Cross-border tensions increased when Kabila ordered 10,000 soldiers to Congo's eastern border region. The government of Rwanda called the move a hostile act.

Kabila says the soldiers were sent in to restore order within Congo.

The military buildup followed an earlier conflict sparked by Congolese rebels battling Kabila's government troops. Kabila says the rebels have the support of Rwanda.
