Haiti's interim prime minister said Monday he was suspending relations with Jamaica and recalling his ambassador in the wake of former Haitian president Jean-Bertrand Aristide's controversial visit to the Caribbean country.

Gerard Latortue made the decision as the deposed leader arrived in Kingston, Jamaica, Monday afternoon after leaving the Central African Republic. Aristide, accompanied by his wife, was taken to the residence of Jamaican Prime Minister P.J. Patterson.

Latortue had warned Aristide's return to the region could increase tensions.

Aristide fled Haiti Feb. 29 as rebel forces advanced on the capital and has since been in the Central African Republic.

His visit to Jamaica is supposed to reunite Aristide with his two daughters, who live in the United States.

Both Haitian and U.S. officials have objected to the visit.

In recent days, U.S. officials have criticized Jamaica for offering Aristide refuge on the island, saying this has raised tensions in neighbouring Haiti and threatens to destabilize a fragile transition process.

Patterson, chairman of the 15-nation Caribbean Community, has called for an international investigation into the circumstances surrounding Aristide's departure from Haiti on February 29.

Aristide claims the U.S. forced him from power. But the U.S. has denied those allegations.
