Israeli warplanes attacked a target in Syria Sunday, calling it a training camp used Islamic Jihad, the group that claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing that killed 19 people.

The strike occurred late Saturday or early Sunday about 20 km northwest of Damascus.

Israeli officials say they hit the Ein Sahev camp, used by the group Islamic Jihad. It's the first Israeli attack on Syria in more than 20 years.

Islamic Jihad denies it has any training areas in Syria, saying all their training takes place inside the Palestinian territories.

The Syrian government says it will lodge an "urgent complaint" with the United Nations.

The attack came less than a day after a suicide bombing in the Israeli city of Haifa killed 19 people. A Palestinian woman blew herself up inside a crowded restaurant.

Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility.

Israel followed the bombing with missile strikes on several areas of the Gaza Strip Saturday. There were no reports of injuries.

An Israeli military statement said they are taking action against those behind the attack and countries that support them, including Syria.

"Syria is a state that supports terror, that constantly tries to frustrate efforts to bring calm and stability to the region and gives cover in its territory and capital to the terror organizations that act against Israeli citizens," the army statement said.
