Leaders of African countries fighting on different sides in the Democratic Republic of Congo have agreed to back a ceasefire in the five-month civil war.

The commitment came at a summit meeting in the Namibian capital, Windhoek.

Namibia, Zimbabwe and Angola have been providing military aid to Congolese President Laurent Kabila. Those allies are starting to feel pressure at home for their role in the conflict.

Rwanda and Angola have been aiding the rebels in the civil war.

Neither Kabila nor the rebels attended the meeting. A rebel spokesman said he welcomed this development but couldn't guarantee a ceasefire until after a face-to-face meeting with Kabila.
