Canadian author Margaret Atwood can now be found keeping company with some of the most-respected writers in the English-speaking world.

In France, students aspiring to teach English in university or high school must now study the works of Shakespeare, Sir Thomas More -- and Margaret Atwood.

Shakespeare and More have been on the list before, but the recent addition of The Handmaid's Tale is a first for Atwood.

The only other other Canadian novel to have made the list was Margaret Laurence's The Stone Angel, selected in 1982.
