Forecasters say Rina has quickly strengthened into a hurricane off the coast of Honduras.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said Monday that Rina was a Category 1 hurricane with top winds of 120 km/h and was centered about 314 kilometres southwest of Grand Cayman.

Forecasters say the storm could become a major hurricane with winds topping 179 km/h by late Tuesday.

The storm is forecast to bring at least five centimetres of rain over the Cayman Islands.
