An overcrowded bus collided head-on with a truck Saturday along a sharp curve on a highway in eastern India, killing 23 people and injuring 15 others.

Police officer Amit Jain said the bus driver apparently lost control of the vehicle in the accident near Dhannarua, a village in Bihar state.

All of the injured have been hospitalized.

Jain said some passengers were riding on the roof of the packed bus.

Road accidents occur frequently in India and are often blamed on reckless driving, aging vehicles and overloading.
