Tropical Storm Erick is moving just offshore along the southwestern coast of Mexico, on its way to the California Baja peninsula.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said Erick was centred early Sunday about 230 kilometres west of Mexico's Pacific coast port of Manzanillo. The storm has top sustained winds of about 30 kph and is moving toward the northwest at 17 kph.

On Saturday, Erick was upgraded to hurricane status.

Forecasters say the storm is expected to approach the Southern Baja California peninsula area late Sunday and pass near the peninsula Monday.

Rainfall totalling 76 to 127 millimetres is possible in some areas.

Mexican authorities say a tropical storm warning is in effect from Manzanillo to Cabo Corrientes on the mainland and in Southern Baja California from Santa Fe to La Paz.
