This year's Juno artist of the year nominees make up a diverse group in terms of musical style, ranging from indie crooner City and Colour to pop sensation Justin Bieber, but they have one key thing in common — all of them are men.
And the male nominations don't end there. All of the nominees for album of the year, rock album of the year, rap recording of the year and dance recording of the year are men.
Indie musician Amy Millan started the hashtag #JunosSoMale (a play on #OscarsSoWhite)
Millan wasn't the only one who noticed the testosterone-heavy nomination list
#junossomale not cool that no female singers are up for artist of the year— @crestsofwaves
Others wished specific female artists had been tapped for the top awards
Grimes, Carly Rae and Buffy Sainte Marie had internationally acclaimed albums last year & they were all overlooked for mediocre men #junos— @_sodapup
Carly Rae Jepson shut out of best pop album and best single. (Did they not hear "Run Away With Me"?) #JUNOS— @joshuaostroff
Last year, Sarah McLachlan was nominated for artist of the year, but the album of the year nominees were all male.
