First-day pre-orders of Apple’s iPhone 4S topped one million, breaking the record set by last year's model, the company said Monday.

Apple Inc. and various phone companies started taking orders for the phone last Friday. It hits stores this Friday, including in Canada.

First-day orders for the iPhone 4 were 600,000 when it launched last year.

The base model of the iPhone 4S costs $200 with a two-year contract. It has a faster processor and an improved camera compared with last year's model.

Apple shares were up more than $14, or nearly four per cent, in early trading Monday.

The Cupertino, Calif.-based technology company suffered a blow last Wednesday when its co-founder, chairman and former CEO Steve Jobs died.
