Subscribers of Microsoft's Xbox Live online video game service can now download Disney movies, Microsoft announced Tuesday.

Thirty-five high-definition Disney movies, including Aladdin and Armageddon, are available immediately to users in the United States, the company announced at the annual E3 electronics expo in Santa Monica, Calif.

"With this partnership, we are able to feature blockbuster new releases as they become available, as well as an incredible array of classic family films," said Peter Moore, a corporate vice-president in Microsoft's entertainment and devices division.

The new agreement will allow Xbox 360 owners to rent films on demand as they become available from Disney, Touchstone Pictures, Miramax Films and Hollywood Pictures.

The service offers more than 2,350 hours of video content and 500 hours of HD content for download to its more than seven million subscribers.

The Xbox Live video service is not available in Canada. A spokesperson from Microsoft Canada said there are currently no details regarding a Canadian release date or prices for the service.

But Erin Bell, reporting from the E3 expo, says the video store should be available in Canada by the end of the year.

During Microsoft's press conference, Moore touted the Xbox 360's new games, including the anticipated sci-fi shooter Halo 3, to launch on Sept. 25 with a Halo-themed version of the console, Mass Effect and Grand Theft Auto IV.

Last week, Microsoft extended the warranty for Xbox 360 consoles that displayed what gamers call the "blinking lights of doom" or "the red circle of death" which signal general hardware failure. The company said it expects to spend more than $1 billion US to repair the broken machines.

The console was released in late 2005 and has sold 11.6 million units worldwide.
