Online video a force among Webby Award nominees

Nominees for the 11th annual Webby Awards were named on Wednesday, with online video websites making a strong showing.
"The internet is becoming an even more integral part of our everyday lives thanks to the creativity and innovation of this year's nominees," David-Michel Davies, executive director of the Webby Awards, said in a written statement. "It's especially exciting to see how so many of them are using the power of video to create a more vital and entertaining online experience."
Video sites and services nominated include Jumpcut in the best broadband category, AOL's TMZ.com for the best celebrity or fan site, and The Extreme Diet Coke and Mentos Experiments by Steven Voltz for best viral video.
This year, there were more than 8,000 entries from a record 60 countries, with international nominees up nearly 30 per cent over 2006, the awards committee said.
The BBC received the most nominations with five nods, followed by U.S. National Public Radio, NYTimes.com and Salon.com with four nominations each; and Yahoo Inc.'s photo-sharing site Flickr, professional social networking site LinkedIn and Yahoo itself with three nominations.
The nominees for best practices — describing sites on the leading edge of web technology and design — were social bookmarking services del.icio.us and Digg, social networking site Facebook, photo-sharing site Flickr and music-sharing site Last.fm
The awards are granted by the 550-member International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, modelled on similar organizations in film and television. The body, whose members also serve as judges for the Webby Awards, aims to educate, develop, recognize and promote achievement in the internet and digital media industry.
Members include Vinton Cerf, co-creator of the TCP/IP — the communications protocol on which the internet operates — The Simpsons creator Matt Groening and U.S. political activist and online publisher Arianna Huffington.
