An update to its iTunes software for computers using the Windows operating system does not repair several compatibility problems with the latest version, Apple says.

"Apple has released a new version of iTunes that addresses a number of compatibility issues with Windows Vista," the company said in a note published on its site that did not specify the changes for Microsoft Corp.'s operating system.

But iTunes 7.1 fails to fix several major flaws, including the potential to corrupt an iPod if it is ejected from the Windows Vista file system using the operating system's "Safely Eject Hardware" option instead of the eject function in iTunes.

"Apple is actively working with Microsoft to resolve a few remaining known issues," said the notice updated Feb. 26.

Vista users may also have problems with the way display text or graphics appear on the screen in iTunes and contacts in the Windows address book may not synchronize with an iPod, Apple said.

People running iTunes on 64-bit versions of iTunes for Windows — including Vista and XP — are still not eligible to receive support for the software, Apple said.

Microsoft launched consumer and retail business versions of Windows Vista on Jan .30.
