Telus Corp. said Wednesday it will stop offering adult content on its wireless network.
The Vancouver company announced the move after enduring weeks of criticism from customers, shareholders and the Roman Catholic Church in Western Canada.
The service, which began in January, offered partial or full nudity in photos and videos for $3 to $4 each. The company was the first wireless provider in Canada to offer the service.
"We did receive a number of customers calling in or writing in and we listened to each and every one of them and we responded to each and every one of them as well and we've taken those concerns to heart," said company spokesman Jim Johannson.
Until yesterday the company refused to back down, saying porn on the web was old news.
Johannson said that type of content was already available on customers' cell-phones, but many people who called weren't aware of that.
Telus's intent was to offer access to legal, non-graphic content, he said.
Several thousand customers had registered for the service.
But Johannson said it was clear from the feedback that people thought it was inappropriate for Telus to be in the business of providing adult content.
