Facebook was hit with a major outage for the second time in two days on Thursday afternoon, with the site down for many users in at least Canada and the United States.

The social-networking site released a statement saying it was experiencing technical issues that were causing the site to be down or run slowly for some users.

"We are working to resolve this issue as quickly as possible. This is unrelated to yesterday’s outage," the company said.

Facebook said it was experiencing issues with its API, or the application programming interface that allows the website to interact with other software.

The problem was also affecting Facebook's "Like" buttons, which appear on many websites and allow users to recommend articles or posts.

The site appeared to be working again as of late Thursday afternoon, although the company had yet to officially announce the problems had been resolved.

On Wednesday, the outage was caused by a problem involving a third-party networking provider.
