Canadian journalist Sue Gardner has been appointed executive director of the Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit organization that runs theonline, user-editedencyclopedia Wikipedia, the foundation announced Monday.
Effective Dec. 1, Gardner is responsible for strategic planning and supervising the day-to-day operations of the foundation and its projects, which include Wikipedia and other free, onlinewiki-basedinitiatives such as online dictionary Wiktionary, quotation compendium Wikiquote and user-generatedtextbook sourceWikibooks.
Wikimedia is "dedicated to encouraging the growth, development and distribution of free, multilingual content, and to providing the full content of these wiki-based projects to the public free of charge," the foundation's website said.
Gardner joined Wikimedia in July as an adviser to the board after leaving her position as senior director of CBC.ca. Before joining the CBC's website in 2001, Gardnerworked for more than a decade as a radio, television and print journalist, producing documentaries and talk programming for the CBC, the BBC and National Public Radio.
