A sexual enhancement pill marketed for both men and women contains the steroid DHEA which can cause higher-than-normal levels of male and female hormones, according to Health Canada.

ExtenZe pills also contain another steroid called pregnenolone, which can cause anger, anxiety, irritability and heart palpitations.

In addition, the male version of the products contain the prescription medication yohimbine, which is associated with anxiety, dizziness, and increased blood pressure.

The drug, which is made from yohimbe extract, has been used to treat erectile dysfunction — though controlled trials show it's not always effective.

As a result of the unauthorized ingredients, the public health agency has seized stocks of ExtenZe from a Vancouver-area adult store, and has asked the Canada Border Services Agency to block any product being shipped to Canada.

Should be avoided

The product has been sold online and may have been carried at other retail outlets in Canada.

Health Canada says ExtenZe could cause health problems in people with a history of abnormal heart rhythms, blood clotting disorder and liver disease.

It should be avoided by anyone who suffers from epileptic seizures or is taking anti-seizure medicine.

In addition, the steroids in the pills could increase the risk of hormonally based cancers such as prostate, breast and ovarian cancers.

Taking the products without medical supervision could also put consumers at risk of drug interactions or other harmful side effects.

Health Canada recommends anyone who has been using ExtenZe sexual enhancement products to consult a doctor, and report any problems they may be having as a result of taking the pills.
