A Quebec-brewed beer has been named one of the world's top five at the World Beer Awards in England.
"Unibroue 17" was brewed only once in late 2007, but it has landed the World's Best Strong Dark Ale title.
It was recognized for its "roasted malt nose, slightly sweet taste and subtle oak finish."
'I am extremely proud.'—Jerry Vietz, Unibroue's brewmaster
“I am extremely proud … since it’s the first beer I created and brewed at Unibroue from start to finish," said Unibroue brewmaster Jerry Vietz.
"I still remember the time spent developing this beer, especially the first day of fermentation when I and three of my brewers added oak chips to the fermenter,” Vietz added.
"Unibroue 17" was one of 500 beers in competition from 27 countries.
It passed through four rounds of judging and blind tasting.
Unibroue, based in Chambly, Que., is the biggest artisanal brewery in Quebec and one of the biggest in North America. It is owned by Japan's Sapporo Brewery.
