The Complete 7-Day Cleanse has been recalled over fears ingredients could result in severe dehydratin. (Health Canada)Health Canada has announced a recall of a natural health cleansing product over concerns the combination of ingredients could boost the laxative effect and result in an electrolyte imbalance.
The Complete 7-Day Cleanse is not authorized for sale in Canada, according to Health Canada spokesman Gary Holub.
The product, imported by Iovate Health Sciences International Inc., of Oakville, Ont., does not have a natural product number, which indicates that Health Canada has not reviewed or approved it.
The product contains 30 active ingredients, including some that act as diuretics and laxatives. The cleansing system is promoted as a multi-ingredient natural health product for "cleansing" or removing toxins from the body.
It's sold over the counter at retail outlets across Canada, and on the internet. Holub could not say how many units have been sold, or whether any adverse reactions have been reported.
Symptoms of severe dehydration include dizziness or "an altered mental state." Symptoms of moderate to severe electrolyte imbalance, which is an imbalance of salts in the body, may include muscle weakness or cramping, abnormal heartbeat, and difficulties breathing.
Health Canada is recommending that people who have used the Complete 7-Day Cleanse speak to a health-care practitioner.
