Health Canada has issued an advisory concerning the recall of an insulin infusion set that could malfunction.
Medtronic of Canada is recalling its Paradigm Quick-set infusion kit which diabetics use to inject themselves with insulin. A small number of the sets – those with lot numbers beginning with '8' – fail to deliver an accurate dose of insulin, causing patients to receive too little or too much of the hormone.
Too little insulin could lead to high blood sugar while too much could cause low blood sugar levels in the body.
Health Canada advises patients using the sets with lot numbers beginning with 8 to stop using the products immediately. The lot numbers can be found on both the box labels and on each individual infusion set package. Those with the reference numbers MMT-396, MMT-397, MMT-398 and MMT-399 are affected.
To return the sets to Medtronic for a replacement, patients can call the company at 1-800-284-4416 between 8:30 am and 7 pm ET.
