Environment Minister Richard Brown introduced amendments Wednesday to the Environmental Protection Act to establish electronics recycling depots across the province.
The depots will handle electronics equipment, TVs to computers, large and small. Brown said the time of simply dumping electronic equipment is over.
"It's a North American thing that's happening," he said.
"People are just saying, we cannot be throwing all this stuff in our landfills. And worse we cannot be throwing them into our incinerators and burning them."
The cost of the recycling program will be covered by people buying new electronics. In regions where diversion programs are in place, fees for new products range from $5 to $45, depending on the size and weight of the item.
Brown said the fee structure on P.E.I. will be set by the industry.
