For the second year in a row, Island potato growers have donated 18,000 kilograms of potatoes to a major food bank in Boston.

The donation was repeated despite the loss of a significant amount of the crop to wet weather in the spring.

Greg Donald, general manager of the P.E.I. Potato Board, said the generosity of Islanders never ceases to amaze him, and he is delighted the growers were able to share the tractor-trailor load of potatoes with the Greater Boston Food Bank.

The potatoes were picked up across the Island on Friday in support of the Stamp out Hunger campaign, a nationwide annual food drive organized by the National Association of Letter Carriers.

The CEO of the food bank said the potatoes will benefit people struggling with tough economic times across Eastern Massachusetts.

The Boston food bank is one of the largest in the U.S., distributing 13.6 million kilograms of groceries annually. P.E.I. growers, packers and dealers support the food banks on the Island on a regular basis, and also help with other areas such as Nova Scotia when possible.
