Starbucks Corp. will shut down its Aberdeen Centre location in Richmond, B.C., on Wednesday, the first of an unknown number of closures in Canada the company is planning as a result of the recent economic slowdown.

The coffee chain recently announced it plans on closing 800 outlets in the U.S. and 100 outlets outside the U.S., but it has so far not revealed how many more outlets in B.C. will be shuttered. Starbucks has 365 locations in B.C.

The coffee retailer said the Aberdeen outlet was closed because of current economic conditions and the location itself was underperforming.

Some employees at the Richmond location said they were given just five days notice about the pending shutdown.

Previously at least one Starbucks outlet on Denman Street in Vancouver was closed, but not as part of the current wave of shutdowns, according to the chain.
