The parents of two Alberta boys born last year – one named Barack and the other Obama – may have been swept up in U.S. presidential fever.
But those weren't the only unconventional baby names in the province in 2008, the Alberta government revealed Friday.
Parents also named their offspring: Delorian, Gonzo, Leonidas, Napoleon, Xerxes, Leia, Anakin, Optimus, Zephram, Jazzy, Jury, Natorious, Rexall, Zeppelin, Anarchy, Castle, Harloquinn, Tyranny, Queen, Science, Taffy, and Tree.
Parents looking for more traditional names mostly stuck with past favourites.
Ethan, picked by 366 families, held the top spot for boys' names in 2008 for the eighth year running, followed by Jacob, Alexander, Joshua, and Liam.
Olivia and Ava tied as the top choices for girls, at 236 each, followed by Emma, Emily, Sarah and Isabella. Ava was the top name for girls in 2007 and 2006.
Alberta had another record-breaking year for births, with more than 50,543 babies born in the province during 2008.
